Freckles Story
An unexpected life
Freckles came into Cathy’s life in the most unexpected way—found in a friend’s backyard, being chased by other horses, vulnerable and in need of kindness. Jim had discovered her in Concow, California, and it was clear she needed a safe place to land. When Cathy’s students went with Mark to see her, something in Freckles touched their hearts immediately. Even in uncertainty, her gentle spirit shone through.
She was a sorrel Morgan mare, about fifteen hands tall, and though she was already around seventeen years old, there was something deeply endearing about her. The students immediately wanted to bring her home to the ranch, and their compassion became the beginning of Freckles’ new chapter. Once she arrived, the girls washed and brushed her with care, and Freckles seemed to soak in every bit of that long-awaited love and attention. In that moment, she was no longer forgotten—she was safe, cherished, and home.
Cathy and Mark settled Freckles into a stall, fed her, and began caring for her with the tenderness she deserved. When the farrier came a few days later, he confirmed that Freckles had foundered and could no longer be ridden. But what some might have seen as limitations, Cathy saw as a chance to give Freckles something far greater than usefulness—she gave her dignity, comfort, and unconditional love.
Freckles remained with them as a beloved companion and a gentle teacher for children learning how to care for horses with patience and compassion. She went on to live a beautiful life, surrounded by kindness, until she was nearly thirty years old. With her heart of gold and her quiet, steady presence, Freckles became a reminder that every life has value, every soul deserves tenderness, and sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply a place to belong. Her story lives on as one of rescue, grace, and the healing power of love.
